RIP Sam Carr 04/17/1926 to 09/21/2009: This terrible news just in from Dave Riley: Mississippi blues drummer and beloved band leader Sam Carr has Passed Away. He Was 83. Sam Was Born Into the legend as son of guitarist/vocalist Robert Nighthawk. Sam is best known for his longtime association with Frank Frost & The Jelly Roll Kings. He was considered one of the greatest blues drummers of all time, and was annually nominated for a Blues Music Award (AKA Handy Award) in the drummer category. He had been struggling with health issues over the last few years, and recently lost his longtime wife Doris, which forced him to live in a nursing facility. Another old friend of the Argentine bluesmen, with no less than five tours around the country, this veteran of the West Side of Chicago is accustomed to the most critical audiences (for over a decade he lived in Europe) and come out on top of them with his introspective style and his original compositions.
Asked about the significance of the C in his name, Eddie ever answered, "Truly it was a B, but not change it because it sounded a woman's name"
Born in Duncan, Miss., in 1939, raised in a farming family until six years was taken by his mother to Chicago.
The guitar comes on as a means of achieving women, and it was his mother who bought one and took him first to see Muddy Waters in bars in the ghettos of Chicago. Seeing
Muddy learned the first songs to mid-50, began his career in a band who shared the stage with Luther Allison and Willie James Lyons.
